On the Carrera’s 55th anniversary in 2018, TAG Heuer introduced the Carrera Calibre 16 – a range of designs that pay homage to vintage chronographs while bearing the sports watch DNA that the collection has been famous for. The brand has many timepieces inspired by this history, and the Carrera is undisputedly the most popular of them. Still, I am finding it hard to see the “Swiss Avant Garde” in this timepiece though it is handsome.There is no denying the deep connection between TAG Heuer and the world of motorsports. The look is what you would expect from a Tag Heuer, with their typical minor touches of modern character on the classic design. The watch should be priced a bit less than the standard Tag Heuer Carrera chronograph watch models. You get the standard nicely finished Carrera case and five link steel bracelet. Tag Heuer actually spells out each hour which is something I’ve never seen before. Look carefully and you’ll notice an interesting hour at the end of each hour marker near the bezel. They are only used to gives the typically square date window a shape the better suits the round dial. The watch uses a Tag Heuer Calibre 5 automatic mechanical movement. The applied hour markers have been extended in length, but the watch hands are still to short and stubby. ![]() Dial colors include the pictured black as well as a new brown color. To keep the dial interesting Tag Heuer applied a Close du Paris style engraving on the mid section of the dial, which gives the dial a less bare look. A new direction for Tag Heuer is to make this three hand version of the popular Carrera watch that is most notably known as Tag Heuer premiere’s sport chronograph (in a round case).The three hand Carrera is actually smaller that the chronograph version as it is in a 39mm wide steel case (about 41mm wide with the crown). ![]()
